Advantages of Flame-Resistant Clothing

The most important reason to invest in flame-resistant (FR) clothing: it helps protect workers from short-term thermal incidents.

In an industrial setting, the most serious burns typically aren’t caused by the actual fire or explosion itself, but by standard workwear (made from non-FR cotton, nylon or polyester) igniting and continuing to burn even after the heat source has been removed. FR clothing helps combat this problem because it self-extinguishes when exposed to flame, dramatically reducing the severity of burn injuries and providing workers with valuable escape time.

Minimizing the percentage of the body that is injured by burns can greatly increase chances of survival. Across all age groups, the survival rate drops significantly when the injury percentage climbs above 50 percent.

FR clothing that is made from quality fabrics and built with durability in mind offers the most cost-effective way to protect your workers from hazards.

While this clothing may be more expensive upfront, many FR fabrics last considerably longer than those used to make non-FR workwear, helping to reduce frequent replacement expenses. And, the cost of a single burn injury (in terms of medical fees, lost work time, workers’ compensation, increased insurance premiums and more) often exceeds the cost of an entire FR program.

FR clothing is an investment that benefits both your workforce and your long-term budget.

The primary function of FR clothing is to protect workers, but it can also protect the company as a whole. State and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) organizations require employers to protect employees from hazards in the workplace and have cited and fined numerous companies that did not provide FR clothing for workers.

OSHA’s requirements regarding FR clothing are likely to become more stringent in the future, and the need for flame-resistant workwear has also been addressed in several industry standards written by ASTM International and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA).

By investing in FR clothing that complies with these important standards and regulations, you can keep your employees safer and avoid citations and fines.

  1. How interesting that flame-resistant clothing is a cost-effective way to protect employees from hazards. This is something my grandfather should consider for his fire department. I’m glad I came across your post to find out about this kind of clothing.
